I'm not just making generic cliche platitudes here..... every single time I've lost a job or something similarly bad happened to me, something totally awesome and better happened immediately afterward that couldn't have happened if the first thing hadn't happened.
I know it doesn't help the feeling of betrayal, or the loss of community, but get ready for awesome things a'comin'.
I thought this might be what your earlier posts were in relation too. I do hope you find a cool new job soon - I'm sure you will! Take care and enjoy smelly old London (I can't take it for more than a couple of days, but I hear other people are more smitten *g*).
It's a city - of course it smells! All cities do. They are all unique, but all contain the common factors of car fumes, industry fumes and stale air with a hint of concrete and rubbish.
Glasgow smells too. I used to live in the country and you could see the air in the city - kind of hazy brown-ish - as you came down off the moors into the valley. But the thing is, you don't notice the smell when you're there - I don't. You notice it when you go away and come back though.
My other problem with London is the size - it takes ages to get out to the countryside, and you can't see out when you're in it!
Ah, good point. I don't get the car fumes so much, I get aviation fuel instead (I work at Heathrow). Like you say.. you just get used to it after a while so you don't notice it any more.
I've lived in the country for most of my life, and to be honest that smelt worse. Yes, the air was crisp and fresh.. but the smell of cow poo from all of the surrounding farms was waaay too overpowering in the summer.
Our village smelled of the farmers spreading a lot, but I don't mind it at all. You just had to remember not to hang the washing out those days. My Grandpa used to tell us the smell was good for us! Anyway, it's at least a natural smell, not chemical fumes, so I'll choose it any day.
Oi! Leave Glasgow alone! lol. If you think thats bad, try Paisley, just outside Glasgow. The streets are greasy and there is pungent acrid furls of *something* arising off the pavements. Now THATS stinky! lol
I ♥ Glasgow - it's my favourite city in the whole world. I live here and I love it! Doesn't mean it doesn't smell. And I love the countryside more.
When I got the train back from Manchester once after staying there for a while and got out of Central Station and smelled the smell of Glasgow, I was so happy to be back! It's very distinct. But then, smell is very strongly tied to emotion in my brain for some reason.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I live here too, and when I returned from Durham, i got the same feeling of "home". I seriously couldn't live anywhere else. :)
I know this is your personal journal, but I didn't know where else to leave a comment. I wanted to tell you I thought your work was absolutely stellar and I will not only miss that - but your obvious dedication and patience. While I am not certain what caused the layoffs but I think it is a shame you and the others were let go. I don't know if you relocated to SF or were originally a local, but I hope you stick around because I'm certain someone will snap you up for your talents and dedication. =)
Hello, we haven't crossed paths directly before, but I want to say that you always seemed like someone who actually cared about LiveJournal, someone who was dedicated to making the site better. Whenever I saw a post from you on lj_design, I was always impressed at how personable and friendly your tone was, even when people were giving you crap. You seemed very approachable. Skimming your journal, I have to say I think you're a lovely person, and I can't imagine a future after LJ that won't be bright for you. I hope you don't mind, but I added you as a friend. You don't have to add me back of course, but I thought I would let you know. ♥ Hang in there, I know it can be tough, but it sounds like you have a lot of support and I'm sure the opportunities will come flowing in. :)
I know you don't know me, but I still read your journals, and I am so sorry about this whole business. Its upsetting how far reaching the economy is, and how unfair the world is for many people. I'll miss you, but you are on to better and brighter things, even if it doesn't feel that way now.
